January Meeting - Mobile Payments

Topic: Everything you wanted to know (and much, much more) about mobile phones.

Guest Speaker: Scott Hutchings

Scott is currently working for Giesecke & Devrient, a company that specializes in security, mainly surrounding the processing of payments.
G&D currently prints 1/2 of the bills in Canada and supplies 100% of the paper our currency is printed on.
G&D is also a major manufacturer of credit and debit cards globally and also produces the Ontario Driver's Licence and Ontario Health Cards.
Scott's role with G&D is involved with moving these types of money and identity to the mobile phone.
The presentation will cover facts about mobile that you never even guessed at and how you will soon be able to use your phone to pay for your coffee at Tim's in the morning, your gas on the way to work, and the groceries you need to pick up on the way home.

Location: Katz's Deli on Dufferin St, just south of the 401.

September Meeting - Wed. 15 Sept.

Andrew Kowalczewski will be our guest speaker on the subject of Insurance. He can answer any of your questions on your car or home insurance.

Location is at Katz's Deli from 7:30pm to 10:00pm

Monthly Meeting at Aktive Motors - Wednesday May 20

The regular meeting for May will be a road trip to Oakville. The destination is Aktive Motors Ltd. at 866 Winston Churchill Blvd. Just take the QEW west to Winston Churchill and head south about 1 km, just past the lights at Royal Windsor Drive on the right. Christian and Scott will be hosting with some light refreshments. Be sure to see all the new developments and the Sonnett.

Logo Contest Results

The results of the Logo Contest were announced at the Monthly Meeting last Wednesday. Here are the finalists:

Logo Contest Closed for Entries

The Logo Contest closed for entries at midnight last night. We have received a number of entries that will be judged over the next two weeks. The winner and runners up will be announced at the March meeting Thanks to all those who made the effort to come up with the designs.

Logo Contest Update - Extension

Due to an insufficient number of entries to the Logo Contest received to date, we are extending the deadline to 11:59 PM Saturday February 28, 2009. The judging will similarly be extended by one month to be announced at the March meeting. There is still time to get going on those designs.

January Meeting - Club History

Wednesday 21 January 2009 at Katz's Deli, 3300 Dufferin Street, 7:30 - 10:00pm 

This month's speaker is Derek Hanson, one of the founding members of the Club and its first president. Many of you may know him as the classroom instructor at the Enhanced Driving Schools. He is always interesting and entertaining. Plan to be there and enjoy the program while noshing on the corned beef sandwich and beer. A reminder that we get the room complimentary with $125 in restaurant sales. Be sure to mention "Saab Club" to the cashier when you pay.

Special Sale - Roy Foss Saturn Saab Chevrolet Leaside

I received a notice in the mail today for a special promotion sale at Roy Foss Saturn Saab Chevrolet Leaside (formerly Mid-Town). It is today, tomorrow, and Saturday (11, 12, 13 Dec). It is not publically advertised. Two examples are an Astra for just over $12K and a 9-3 for just over $30K.

Logo Contest - Rules Posted

I have posted the Logo Contest rules as published in the November 2008 Gryphon on my Blog. Lets get out those pencils and graphics programs and start churning out ideas.

Logo Contest Rules

The Saab Club of Canada (the Club) Logo Contest 2008/9 

1.  Purpose – The purpose of the contest is to solicit designs for a new Logo for the Club.

2.  Eligibility – The contest is open to everyone 18 years of age and older, except the Club’s secretary and Logo Contest Judges.

3.  Submissions – All submissions must follow these parameters.

          a. The logo design should incorporate the words “The Saab Club of Canada”.

          b.  The logo design should be intended to front the Club's website and be used on correspondence such as letterhead, in the Club  newsletter Gryphon and on forms. The printed size of the graphic portion should be no more than 4 cm by 5 cm oriented either horizontally or vertically. If this size limit is exceeded it may only be the text portion of the logo, as for a header. The design should be clear and uncluttered when printed at the intended size.

          c.  The logo design should be submitted in electronic format to the email address secretary [at] saabclub [dot] ca and in a universal graphics raster format such as giff, tiff, wmf, etc. Files may be submitted in pdf if the master raster files are also available. Designs submitted in proprietary file formats will be rejected. The image should be submitted in both colour and monochrome versions. If possible, a scalable graphics file should be included. A short text explanation of the intent and features of the design consisting of no more than 200 words may be submitted with the graphic designs.

4.      Prizes

         -      First Prize –  One free attendance at a Saab Club of Canada Enhanced Driving School in 2009. This offer is subject to driver and car eligibility requirements.

         -      Second Prize – Two years of free Saab Club of Canada full membership.

         -   Third Prize – One year of free Saab Club of Canada full membership.

The Club will make every reasonable effort to present the prizes offered. If such prizes are unavailable then an alternate prizes of equivalent value will be substituted.

5.      Intellectual property rights – the winning and two runner-up designs submitted for this contest become the property of The Saab Club of Canada. By submitting the design, the entrantt warrants that the work is original and free of all copyright or other encumbrances that would prevent its use by the Club for any of the intended purposes. The Club offers no compensation for the use of the designs other than the prizes offered, other than credit in the Gryphon for the logo designer. Where possible, credit for the logo chosen and used by the Club will be given in the Gryphon.

6.      Judging – The submissions will be reviewed by a judging panel selected by the Secretary of The Saab Club of Canada. As some of the submissions may be from the Directors, Officers or Committee Chairs of the Club, the judging panel will be selected to avoid conflicts of interest. The judging panel will be selected to include specialists in Graphic Design and other areas concerning preparation of corporate materials and advertising. The decisions of the judges are final. The Club is not obligated to use the winning or runner-up designs and may alter them and use them in altered form.

7.      Timing – The contest will be announced on November 19th 2008 at the monthly meeting. Submissions must be made no later than 11:59 pm on Sunday 31st January 2009. Judging will be completed and the winners announced at the February 2009 monthly meeting (scheduled for Wednesday 19th February 2009).

8.   Privacy and Personal Data – Submissions are confidential until the completion of judging and until the announcement of the winner and runners-up. Only the submissions of the winner and two runners-up will be disclosed and published. The designs and all personal data of all other submissions will be kept confidential, other than announcing the total number of submissions received.
