Fuel gauge reading problems can occur at many places. I am not an expert but I do have experience to share. This is what had happenned to me. One morning, I filled up the tank to the top (a 01 9-5), started a long hwy trip, may be 100km into the trip, I noticed the fuel gauge dropped to R. I observed my other gauges, everything looked normal and the car ran normal. A little while later, the fuel gauge got back to where it should be and I had no reason to doubt it. By the end of the drive, that's 700km later, I pulled it into parking lot, turned off engine. Came back a few hours later, turned the key, nothing happenned, no sound, no crank. It turned out my battery terminal was loose. So, I tightened it, started the car and left. I don't know whether the battery terminal loose may be a cause for your fuel guage showing R. I read your posting a few times, it is possible, so although the chances may be remote, it will be worth your time to just double check your battery terminal connection, make sure they are in good condition and connecting well. Cost you nothing, may solve this problem. Good luck.

Thanks for the post, the posts are in good condition i tighten them up when it happen as i disconnected the battery to see if it would reset the gauges , as i read up on some other sites i seen a similar post and it was the sending unit and all he did was some hard braking and cornering and it went back up to the normal spot, so as i read that i went out for a drive did a bit of hard braking and in no time the gauge started to rise, its been good so far but i'm going to take it in only because i just had the fuel pump done 4 weeks ago so if that's the problem its still under warranty .. thanks for the help tho

Make sure they check for a loose baffle in the fuel tank that can cause the float not to move properly.

If it's loose then have them pull it out and throw it in the garbage- problem solved!
