Newsletter

Greetings,

As the current editor of the Gryphon, the newsletter of The Saab Club of Canada, I'm the "ink stained wretch" to best describe it.

Click on the current month's Gryphon cover page for a pdf file of page 3

Fresh Newsletter

Why only page 3?
One of the advantages of membership is the newsletter, so there was much discussion whether it would be posted on the website. In truly Canadian fashion, a compromise was reached-the website would have not the entire newsletter but the page with the table of contents-so that website visitors could get an idea of what the newsletter contains.

Back copies may be posted in the future if the file sizes prove to be manageable.

Distribution

Gryphon is published in time for the monthly meeting of the club held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month (except December when there is no meeting). The newsletter is free to members and the club saves some postage by distributing their copies to those members at the monthly meetings. The remaining copies are then mailed.

Basic Format

Gryphon has been 16 pages in length for a number of years, but may have to jump to 20 pages sometime in the future because the font size is now as small as can easily be read but I need more space. It contains a calendar of upcoming events, columns by the President and Driving School chair, articles of interest to club members (or at least, I hope they are of interest), and both classified ads and display ads by retailers (for more on both classified ads and advertising, see below)

Contributions

Anyone is invited (please don't make me beg!) to submit an article for the newsletter-contributors don't have to be members. I would very much like to have some more steady columnists, especially someone from a Saab repair facility, to write a short column every month on a topic of their choosing.

Classified Ads

Text, or text & photo classified ads are free to Club members. The cost to non-members is $30.00 for a picture ad and $20.00 for text only. The ad will appear in the monthly newsletter, the Gryphon, and on the "Classified" webpage, for 3 months. Here's how to submit a classified ad.

Advertising

I'm not in charge of advertising, thankfully-I just have to deal with the problems of making ads created in certain kinds of software cooperate enough to appear in the newsletter, so all I can really say is:

  • The advertising rates are, in my opinion, ridiculously low. For example, a full-page ad for 11 months is only $225.00. Hmm...maybe that's why we don't have many half-page ads-a full page is too inexpensive.
  • Advertisers are indeed welcome. Try if for just a month if you want-the cost would be negligible and the results might be surprising.
