Isn't the skid pad hard on the car?

Not really.
Certainly, our exercises make you do things rapidly. You will unsettle a vehicle. That said, you're only going a maximum of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour. This in contrast with the much higher speeds on the track.
Hard-braking exercises where you make the ABS anti-locking come on seems very hard and rough on the car but it really isn't. In fact, the car was designed for this.
If something "goes wrong" and you fall off the skid pad surface, you'll be going very slow. Exurberant drivers at driving schools who have left the track surface at high speed have been known to break suspension pieces, bend or break wheel rims, etc. Of course, these types of incidents are very rare at SCC schools.
We always try to keep the skid pad wetted down. This is great for lower traction limits. But it is also easy on tires.
