October Meeting - Hypermiling and Getting the Most from your Saab

The October meeting will be at Katz's Deli on the 15th. Bring your appetite. With gas costing over a dollar a litre, how do you stretch your fuel for the greatest distance? A new set of driving skills have been developed to maximize the bang for your bucks. We will look at some of the factors that influence fuel consumption. And no, it doesn't mean driving with an egg under your foot. We will also be talking about tires and how to prepare your car for winter.

Update

While the cost of fuel has dropped a lot in the past few weeks, some of the ideas are still useful to get good fuel economy. The two websites to browse are www.cleanmpg.com and www.ecomodder.com

Remember to stay within the law and don't obstruct traffic or aggrevate other drivers if you try some of the techniques.

One thing I didn't mention at the meeting - a partial radiator blocker can be very effective to heat up the car quicker in the winter. I use a piece of 1/4" plywood with 4" diameter holes cut in it for about 30 to 40 per cent open area. The idea is to reduce the amount of cold air flowing over the engine, thus reducing the heat loss. Fuel is saved by the quicker rise to operating temperature. You get heat from the heater faster as well.
