Here is a list of items you might consider bringing to an advanced driving school. Warning: this was provided by Blake Nancarrow - he does not pack lightly.

Print this page for handy reference.

Dealing with the elements
Race tracks seem to have their own weather...
Pack clothes for any or all conditions.
Schools in April or October, pack for cold weather too.
Summer schools: pack for thunderstorms.

  • coat, liner, long johns, toque, gloves (for off-season schools)
  • windbreaker, sweater (for layers)
  • long-sleeve shirt (for layers; some schools ban short-sleeve shirts on track)
  • rain gear, umbrella, boots
  • extra shirt (for layering or to freshen up at day's end)
  • hat (for sun or rain)
  • extra socks
  • long pants (you cannot wear shorts during a school)
  • flat shoes (you cannot wear sandals or open-toed shoes during a school)
  • sunscreen
  • sunglasses
  • tarp or small tent or couple of "rough neck" containers (for when it rains)
  • ziploc bags, different sizes (for keeping cell phone, palmtop, papers dry)

Down time
You'll have a few of breaks in the day.
Bring these items to help you relax and recharge.

  • lawn chair(s)
  • cooler (for water or juice)
  • snack, energy bar, fruit
  • water, water, and water (we provide some but bring your own)

Car preparation
Some people bring their big rigs to the track with all their gear and tools.
At the other end of the spectrum, some like to "arrive and drive."

  • window cleaner and paper towel
  • engine oil (particularly if you have an older engine)
  • pre-mixed coolant
  • tire gauge (remember to add 5 pounds before you arrive)
  • torque wrench (many people have this item so you can borrow one)
  • wheel lock key or adapter
  • socket set (or at least the socket for your wheel nut/bolt size)
  • spare car key (if you're prone to locking yourself out)

Paperwork
Don't forget your personal documentation and whatever paperwork you can
complete ahead of time.

  • driver's licence (we sure hope you have one!)
  • auto insurance certificate
  • school application, completed, if you've not preregistered
  • money, cash or cheque, if you've not pre-paid; at least enough for incidentals
  • driver waiver, completed
  • directions and maps
  • track and facilities map
  • driver's handbook (to review your notes)
  • this cool checklist!

Personal affects
This section should not to suggest schools are hard on you...
But if you get a headache, it could prevent you from driving!

  • extra contact lens
  • contact lens drops
  • aspirin
  • antacid
  • anti-nausea medication or sea bands

Miscellaneous
Last, but not least...

  • helmet

You may be surprised by what is not listed here. That is because there are many things that you might carry around on your person or in your car which are simply not needed at the track. For example, leave the work laptop, suit, briefcase at home. You likely won't have time to rollerblade, play Ultimate Frisbee, tennis, or baseball. Assuming you're not bringing the kids, you don't need the toys, books, games, and baby/child seat(s).
