School Preparation for Instructors

ARCHIVE ALERT! This is a page for our old Enhanced Driving School. It is no
longer being maintained and remains accessible for archival purposes only.
Our driving school is now called Enhanced Driving Synergy and current info
can be found on it's new website drivingsynergy.com:

The following are notes for instructors for The Saab Club of Canada driving schools. This section is for both new and experienced instructors and please read this entire document before attending our schools. Review it throughout the year.
Your Track Time
First things first, right? Your track time will appear on the school schedule. There is a session first thing in the morning, usually starting at 8:00am or very soon after! We don't care if you don't take your track time then, but we do want you to be at the instructors meeting at 9:00am.
We recommend that you plan to arrive at the track 7:30am to 7:45am.
Gates open at 7:00am.
We do not demand you to take students or their guests with you during your track time, but we do ask you to consider it if a student asks you for a ride. Some instructors have said that they would like some time on the track without students.
If you're using a "track" car and the passenger seat is removed, we encourage you to reinstall it, so you can provide opportunities for students to see you drive and further learn.
Student Cars
The rules for driving a student's car during instructor track time are simple: the student must have volunteered their car (you cannot ask to drive it), you and the student must have agreed in advance in the presence of a witness what will happen if it breaks while you are driving it, the student must be with you in the car, and you must drive cautiously.
It is usually built right into the schedule that you will drive the student's car at the beginning of the day for a couple of laps, so to show them the track configuration, the general line, flagger stations, pit out and in procedures. If we change the configuration during the day, the next session you may drive a lap or two to show the new route.
Do not abuse this situation. If we receive reports that you are insisting to drive the participant's car at other times and they are not comfortable, we will investigate this serious matter.
In the end, regardless of what we suggest and schedule, the driver may refuse to let you drive. You must respect their wishes.
Guests
Your guests, be they friends, kids, family members, co-workers, etc. are welcome to come as spectators but they have to sign all applicable waivers and they will also be charged at flat fee of $15 for lunch and refreshments. Starting in 2008 we have had special requirements for minors (anyone under the age of 19). BOTH parents have to sign a parental consent form, and the minor also has to sign a separate form (see "Legal Stuff" section below). Furthermore, one of the parents has to be present at the track.
If your guests would like to volunteer as Helpers, please let Scott Hutchings know ASAP (president [at] saabclub [dot] ca). All Helpers must be accepted well in advance of the school and if accepted, their lunch and refreshments will be provided for free. All other guests will be charged $15 per person at the gate, regardless of whether or not they plan to eat lunch or take refreshments.
Waivers and Insurance
You do not have to be a member of our club to be covered by our club insurance policy for track events so long as you are one of our authorized instructors (and you are or you wouldn't have been invited to teach). But you do have to complete and sign the waivers.
Note that your waiver is good for the entire calendar year. However, should any of your personal contact, emergency contact, or insurance information change within the the year, please complete a new copy with your current information.
Remember that our club insurance policy covers you while you are acting as an instructor, not a racer, so teach and drive accordingly. Lead by example. Follow the same rules as the drivers.
Be sure to complete your automobile (liability) insurance policy information no matter the car or cars you use at the track.
In order to participate as either a driver (or a spectator), everyone must sign track waiver(s), club waivers, and any other relevant documents as required by the morning check-in staff. These documents say basically the same thing - you agree not to sue anyone involved in the school for any injury you or your car suffer, for any reason whatsoever. We all acknowledge that motorsports can dangerous. There now, we've explained them in plain English so you can't say later that they were too long to read or too difficult or whatever. Everyone signs so everyone is in the same position. Download the applicable waivers, print and complete them, and bring them with you. This will speed up the morning paperwork and allow you to get settled sooner!
- ASN Waiver for Drivers, Instructors, Helpers and Guests
- 2010 Club Waiver for Drivers, Helpers and Guests
- 2010 Club Waiver for Instructors
- ASN Waiver for Minors
- ASN Waiver for Parents
Both the ASN and Club waivers are needed. All minors (including Drivers who are under the age of 19) will also need to sign the Waiver for Minors and have both of their parents sign the Waiver for Parents. Also note that one of the parents has to be present at the track (even if the minor is a Driver).
The personal information about yourself and your emergency contact, telephone numbers, automobile isurance information is gathered and used by the Club only, for the purposes of running driving schools. For more information please see our policies section.
Assigning Instructors and Student Evaluations
In the past we did not assign instructors to students. We asked that you stay with the same student as much as possible. However, a majority of drivers complained that this did not happen and they wanted the same person through the day.
So, beginning in 2004, we have specific driver-instructor assignments. Please stay with them and be on time for their track sessions. If there's friction or a communication problem, of course we'll make a switch.
As in the past, we'll be doing student evaluations. The drivers receive the evaluation form at the beginning of the day and they carry it around with them. The evaluations are designed to be filled out THROUGHOUT the day. Ask for it at the end of each track session and monitor their progress and improvement. Then review it at the end of the day. There's space for comments.
Attire
Long pants are required. Full shoes (i.e. not sandals) are required. Socks are a real good idea.
You may wear short sleeve shirts...
Tilley hats seem popular.
Passing and Windows
Same SCC rules as always...
Passing is indicated by hand signals made by the driver (not the person in the right-hand seat). For this purpose the driver's window must be down far enough (yes, even if it is pouring rain) to allow the driver to easily make the signal—but not all the way down.
The usual passing areas apply for all drivers. Some passing zones are short so make sure the driver being passed really lifts off on the throttle...
The passenger window must be at least half-way up. It may be closed.
If there are problems with passing, please first discuss with the other instructor, if possible. If the issue is not resolved, then discuss with the chief.
You might also read "the rules" page. It is written mainly with the driver or student in mind. But it sheds light on how we do things.
Singing Off a Student
You may sign off a student to go alone.
To complete the sign-off process, make an entry in the sign-off binder, noting the date and time, whether you believe it applies for the current school only or future events, along with any comments. Then obtain a sign-off sticker from the chief instructor and affix it to the car or driver.
You are still responsible for this driver.
Promoting a driver may also be done by filling out a form in the sign-off binder. Please document when you have a driver progressing nicely. Also note when a driver might have instructor potential.
Priority #1
Safety is our highest priority. As per usual. Let us work together to maintain the very high standards and quality of the The Saab Club of Canada enhanced driving schools.
